Antony Gormley est un artiste anglais versé dans les sculptures figuratives.
Né en 1950 à Londres, il est diplômé en archéologie et anthropologie avant de bifurquer dans des études artistiques.
Il fait depuis parti de plus grands artistes contemporains mondiaux, exposant et installant ses oeuvres imposantes en Angleterre et dans le monde entier.
Une des plus célèbres de ses oeuvres est intitulée Ange du Nord (Angel of the North), un ange d’acier aux ailes de 54 mètres d’envergure, et est installée à Gateshead en Angleterre.
Il explore la relation du corps humain à l’espace, la tension entre l’individuel et l’universel, dans une vaste gamme de média et matériaux.

His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human beings stand in relation to nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise.
Martin Caiger-Smith, responsable du programme de maîtrise en conservation du musée d’art au Courtauld Institute de Londres, a publié une monographie sur le travail de l’artiste, documenté par de nombreuses photos et disponible sur Amazon.
